Just imagine how you could transform your results if you could:-
Inspire you people towards a common goal;
Enable them to stretch themselves to fulfil their own potential in the process; and
Collaborate effectively to achieve that common purpose.
My model of employee ownership provides the framework to create this.
Employee engagement provides a convenient heading for describing what you need, and some solutions for what can help. But unless you provide a framework that addresses both employees’ immediate and future needs your efforts will be doomed, and you will experience the same lack of strategic success that Harvard and Fortune describe.
Thus the slip between cup and lip, strategy and implementation, can be enormous if your focus is wrong and your people are not fully engaged. So make sure when you set customer experience as a measure that it is something over which you have total control and that you are not setting yourself up for failure.

Now you can see how closely allied purpose and employee engagement are. The more you can align these three drivers of individual and organisational purpose the more engaged your employees will be, and the better your organisational performance.
At the end of the day employees are people and employee engagement is ultimately about nothing more than how best to deal with your people; by treating them as human beings. After all, as Conant clarified, they are what ultimately determine your success.
